Maines told the audience earlier this week, ``Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.''
Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.
The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and ``the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost.''
In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, ``I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view.''
The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album ``Home'' on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include ``Wide Open Spaces,'' ``Ready to Run'' and ``Landslide.''
Can someone not voice their opinion just because they are in the public eye? I keep hearing people say, "Actors & actresses & rock singers need to stay out of politics & stick to acting/singing."
Ummmmm.....I am an actress. I just haven't "made it" yet. Can I not have a political opinion? Who is allowed to have a political opinion? What about all the lawyers, postal workers, teachers, supermarket workers, stockboys, cashiers, mall workers, telemarketers, doctors, nurses, electricians, etc., that are voicing their opinions about this impending war? Just about EVERYONE has an opinion on the war issue....why are some people allowed to voice their opinions, but others (celebrities, etc.) ought to stay quiet? That's ridiculous. I think celebrities are right to use their "power" for a good cause, & these particular celebrities obviously feel like preventing a war is a good cause. To boycott Dixie Chicks music simply because they are anti-war/anti-violence...well, that's just stupid. It's like what my dad told me the other day...."Alice, if you are going to not listen to every singer or band that does drugs or boycott every movie by an actor who has a substance abuse problem, you are never going to see any movies, TV shows, or listen to any good music." Unless the Dixie Chicks believe in something heinous--like abusing a child is okay---it's ridiculous to boycott them for an opinion. Should I stop listening to any singer who is pro-life? Ridiculous & stupid.
